The cost of boreholes seems excessive

The cost of boreholes may seem excessive but you must consider the capital costs of the drilling equipment and transportation expenditure.

Depending on the local geology we are looking at multiple boreholes, with depths up to 100m.

We design the borehole depths to meet the requirements of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Both our air source and ground source heat pumps meet the requirements of that scheme. We want to offer our customers the best possible MCS heat pumps, installation service and customer protection, which wouldn’t be possible without the backing of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme.

Boreholes must be designed to fit MCS guidelines, and under the MIS 3005 design & installation guidelines, we are required to design the boreholes to fit a worst case scenario and assumed Lambda value. This also means we must assign a SPF (seasonal performance factor)  on the emitter temperature of the worst performing room.

Is it possible to reduce the cost?

Although the original cost may seem excessive at first, because we are preparing for a worst case scenario, the final meterage may well be shorter following the full design, which would in turn reduce the cost. We are happy to give contact details of local approved drillers who you can contact directly to get quotes but would strongly advise to get references and use drillers with local knowledge
