LATEST SPORTS NEWS – REINA GROUP COME OUT ON TOP
Who needs the Champions Trophy when watching a riveting cricket match? The Reina Group secured their first ever cricketing win last night against a Hythe 2nd eleven who were determined not to give Ricky Reina “bragging rights”.
Micky Dix opened the batting and was firing on all cylinders until retired hurt on 50. With valuable contributions from Nick Langley, Mick Richmond & Rob Knott the Reina score catapulted to a creditable 135 from 20 overs.
Confidence oozed from the home side until they realized they had to face 4 overs each from our scary opening attack of Dan Large & Darren Winfield. They managed to escape relatively unscathed and looked set for victory on 85 -3 in the 12th over. However, the secret weapons of Leon Dix’s slow medium spin, and Ricky Reina who, looking at his strange technique must have been taking lessons from Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga, reduced the home side to 118 – 7 in the 19th over. Eighteen from the last over was the shout; could Reina Group win for the first time or would all the hard work be in vain? Time for a solid nerve and a man of steel to step up and be counted. Unfortunately all we had in reserve was Thomas Reina, 10yrs old and waiting to bowl his first competitive over because his dad had promised he could play. Only a single from his first, then a “No” ball. The pressure was getting to everyone but with encouragement from both sides, young Tom rose to the occasion and finished with 4 daisy cutters that leaked only a single run and we were victorious.
