There are two main types of MCS heat pumps available to you: ground source and air source heat pumps. They work similarly, using almost the same refrigerant technology but through different means of gathering energy.
Ground source heat pumps
These heat pumps provide you with heat from the ground. Fluid filled pipes are laid horizontally in the ground, or vertically via bore holes. The trenches will require more space than the boreholes, but the process works in the same way. An alternative is to extract water from the ground, river or lake allowing it to pass through a heat exchanger to provide heating and hot water before returning to the source.
Air source heat pumps
Air source pumps extract heat from the ambient air temperature and convert this energy via a liquid into a gas, which with the aid of a compressor increases the temperature so it can heat a home’s hot water and heating.
Air to water systems connect to a wet central heating system, which will replace your current oil or gas boiler. This will provide your home with both central heating and hot water, usually via either under floor heating or through traditional radiators. Air to air heat pumps only provide space heating through hot air and are not covered by the RHI (renewable heat incentive)
