There are two main variations of heat pump system: air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps.  They work in a similar fashion, using almost the same technology.

Air source heat pumps extract warmth from the ambient air temperature into fluid and, with the help of a compressor, increase that temperature so that it can be transferred into your home’s hot water and heating system.  Air-to-water systems are connected to your wet central heating system, so take the place of a conventional boiler.  In this case, the air source heat pump provides hot water and central heating, either through radiators or underfloor heating.  Air-to-air heat pump systems do not provide hot water and provide space heating through hot air.

Ground source heat pumps take heat from the ground, either via fluid filled pipes laid horizontally in trenches or vertically in bore holes.  The latter require the least amount of space for obvious reasons.  The warmed fluid undergoes the same process as with air source heat pumps and is used for hot water and central heating.

Heat pump systems use technology that is relatively new to Sussex, however its use is become more widespread.  Heat pump systems have a very low carbon footprint, and by using an MCS installer like The Reina Group, you may be eligible for Government-backed financial incentives.  This technology has been used for many years in Sweden, so it is tried and tested in a climate much more extreme than in Sussex.
